in ten years ―for the theory of landscape
In autumn 2023, I held a solo exhibition at the café gallery in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture; I came to understand the present/reality of the Hamadori region, which can be ungeneralised as “ten years after the disaster”. I should do what remains undone? I had vaguely been thinking so. Not as a party involved in the disaster but as one who unknowingly had been consuming electricity from Fukushima, I as an artist, must stay conscious of the fact, to question their “wounds” and “pains” repeatedly, to think about the “impossibility” of being close to the grief of others; those would reflect our new “theory of landscape”.

I can see the sunrise from the east-facing hotel window on the fourth floor. The first train from Tomioka Station is after 6:00, and there is still some time. I leave the hotel earlier to see the flowers on the Persian silk tree I met yesterday.

Passing through a rain-soaked forest road and entering Ōkuma-machi, the peaceful countryside continues for a while. Crossing the bridge over the Kumakawa River, the residential area will be close. A house collapsed under the weight of time, and daffodils left in the garden. Strangely endearing, I pressed the shutter once—something I usually hesitate to do. I doubt I'll even recall the place for next time.

I leave the hotel at 5:30 AM. The temperature is 0°C. It is calm before dawn, with no wind. A crescent moon is visible in the night sky, which is beginning to take on a reddish hue. A ten-minute walk from the hotel near the station brings me to the “Hamakaidō” road. Crossing the road, I look down to see the lights of a fishing vessel preparing to depart from Tomioka Port. The town's community wireless system plays a tune announcing 6:00, and I watch the boat quietly leave the harbour. Seagulls flap their wings simultaneously. Beautiful country.

Photo Book : in ten years ―a tale of a beautiful countory/utopia
in ten years ―a tale of a beautiful countory/utopia
The new photo book features 170 photographs taken from 2021 to the summer of 2024. While exploring the Kido Station area, having been ‘reconstructed’ in the past decade, along with other regions of Fukushima that still face an uncertain future, I show the ‘current reality’ of the ‘Hama-Dori’ area, which cannot simply be summarized as ‘ten years after the disaster’. Not as a party involved in the disaster but as one who unknowingly had been consuming electricity from Fukushima, I as an artist, must stay conscious of the fact, to question their ‘wounds’ and ‘pains’ repeatedly, to think about the ‘impossibility’ of being close to the grief of others; those would reflect our new ‘theory of landscape’.
